This tool allows me to quickly test my outlets and AFCI and GFCI breakers performance in my home without using a meter. It does the job for what I need it to do.

AFCI test works on ch and square d+ other brands GFCI and 30ma tests work well. The only downside is that it can get hot if you are continuously AFCI testing.

if you are not, then this may not be a must – but I bet it is still helpful. I am color blind and have a love hate relationship with the plug testers because I can’t always see what they are telling me. in a dark room, maybe – but for sure not all the time. This is a little bulkier, but know I don’t have to worry about interpreting light colors, positions, etc.the gfci trip is also really hand. the only thing to improve this would be some sort of keyboard and memory or phone app where you could show an inventory and testing of all the receptacles for a customer.

Bought this to do a voltage drop to help determine first outlet in the line. Because of it being old wiring, the device refused to work. Pointless. Would have been nice to know this wouldn’t work with my wiring.

The lcd screen is a very nice touch to this very useful tool. I use this tool in the professional maintenance world where yearly outlet tension and polarity testing must be done …

GFCI only testers are pretty cheap: just get the plug on kind with plain incandescent bulbs that show you bad wiring combos and have a “GFCI” test button. Those do fine. I got this for the AFCI testing ability, and I am impressed with it.I assumed that the tester “cheats” by synthesizing some kind of voltage signal on the wire that tricks the breaker into tripping, but this device has a component inside that generates an actual electrical arc. (There is a teardown video on YouTube that is great). If the breaker doesn’t trip (e.g. you use it on an unprotected circuit) the arc will go on for a bit and heat up the component. The device has a temperature safety built in that will show you the arc generator is too hot and won’t let you trigger it. This is a quality tool. Now, I did say for wiring state and GFCI the cheapo passive plug in ones are sufficient, but this tool also has a more comprehensive readout for the outlet state. For example, on one of my outlets, after the breaker tripped with the AFCI test, I got a read out saying something was wrong with the off state of the outlet. I have to now check to see what happened.

I used this to test all of my house outlets. I found one that had reversed wiring, so it was definitely worth it. I was also able to independently test the GFCI outlet functions, and not just rely on the test buttons built into those outlets. I don’t have any AFCI outlets so I can’t try that test function.Tester is easy to handle and small enough to reach most outlets. Cord length is short but acceptable given the function of this tester. An extension cord may be needed for reaching outlets where there is not enough space to fit the tester, or where the tester display needs to be located far from the outlet for easier viewing of the status lights. The build quality is good. The tester display just has simple lights but they are easy to see and understand. The main downside is that the tester turns itself off too quickly. This frequently happened right when I plug it into an outlet. According to the instructions, the tester shouldn’t be turned on while it is plugged into an outlet, so it’s a little annoying and a slight waste of time every time it turns off to pull it back out, turn it on, and then push it back into an outlet. It would be great if there was a way to adjust the amount of time it can be idle before it turns itself off.
